The Mary Celeste

The Mary Celeste was a Canadian merchant ship that first set sail in 1860. For ten years the ship was owned by several different people, ending up in a New York salvage auction where it was purchased and put under American registry. On November 7, 1872 the Mary Celeste set sail for the last time from New York with its new owners on board: Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife and daughter, and a crew of eight. They were never heard from again. One month later, the ship was found floating in the Strait of Gibraltar, unmanned and apparently abandoned. There were no signs of struggle.
